How Start Your Story Began

Hi, I'm Henri Ken, the creator of the Start Your Story course. The idea for this course was born after I attended a large online workshop with over 100 writers. Many of them were beginners or aspiring authors who desperately wanted feedback but had no real outlet for it. In the chat, people were copying and pasting snippets of their novels—hoping someone might notice—but of course, with so many participants, no one could truly engage with their work. I saw just how isolated and unsupported many new writers feel, and it struck me: there needed to be a space where writers could receive meaningful, affordable feedback. That’s exactly why I created the Start Your Story course.

Affordable, Practical Support That Works

We want to make writing as accessible as possible. Unlike expensive degree programs or the high cost of hiring a private editor, this course is designed to give you the best of both worlds: structured learning and personalised feedback. With 13 assignments, you’ll not only practise your craft but also receive detailed comments from passionate writers who genuinely care about helping you progress. The certificate at the end is a nice touch, but the true value lies in the feedback: honest, constructive guidance from people who share your love of writing and are committed to helping you succeed. Because while feedback from friends and family can be kind, it rarely matches the insight you’ll gain from experienced, invested readers.

Incredible Value & Lifetime Access

At the regular price of £249.99, this course works out at less than £20 per assignment—many of which will be over 500 words in length. That’s already exceptional value for in-depth, personalised feedback.

But it gets better!

Right now, for a limited time, you can enrol for just £125—only £9 per assignment. Alongside lifetime access to the course materials, you’ll also receive ongoing email support whenever you need it. This is a rare opportunity to invest in your writing without breaking the bank. Don’t miss out—enrol today and take the first step in starting your story.

What Does The Course Cover?

Throughout the course, you'll explore 13 modules packed with information, activities and examples:

Part 1 - Creating Character

Learn how to build believable, multi-dimensional characters that feel real on the page, with motivations, flaws, and goals that keep readers invested in their journey. The first assignment, 'Curious Encounters' involves you writing about an 'encounter' with a character you have a created (50 – 100 words).

Part 2 – Creating Settings

Discover how to craft immersive settings that don’t just describe a place but create mood, atmosphere, and a sense of belonging for your characters and readers. Assignment two, 'A Sense of Place' involves writing about a character interacting with a setting (100 – 500 words).

Part 3 – Creating Imagery

Explore the power of vivid imagery and sensory detail to bring your writing to life, making your scenes more memorable and emotionally engaging. Assignment Three, 'Paint Me a Picture', involves writing a description of a piece of artwork from the perspective of a character you have already developed  (100 – 400 words).

Part 4 – Showing vs Telling

Master the balance between showing and telling so your writing becomes more dynamic, drawing readers in rather than simply reporting events. In Assignment Four, 'Show Me a Story', you will write a short scene that encompasses the elements you have already explored. (200 – 600 words).

Part 5 – Writing Openings

Learn how to hook your readers from the very first line with strong, compelling openings that make them want to keep turning the page. Assignment Five, 'In The Beginning', involves writing an opening to a short story, focusing on introducing character and setting. (25 – 100 words).

Part 6 – POV

Understand different points of view and how to use them effectively to control perspective, deepen character, and shape your story. In Assignment Six, 'Switching Perspective', you will experiment with writing a piece of work in an alternative POV to explore its pros and cons, and its effects on the reader (200 – 500 words).

Part 7 – Dialogue

Develop the skills to write natural, engaging dialogue that reveals character, builds tension, and keeps the story moving. In Assignment Seven, 'Time to Talk' you will write a dialogue exchange between the character you have developed and a new character, using the tools you have gathered throughout this module (200 – 500 words).

Part 8 – Action

Find out how to write clear, compelling action scenes that are exciting without becoming confusing or overwhelming. In Assignment Eight, 'And... ACTION', you will write an action scene / sequence that incorporates many of the skills you have learnt in this module (300 – 700 words).

Part 9 – Tension and Suspense

Learn techniques for building tension and suspense so your readers stay hooked and eager to see what happens next. In Assignment Nine, 'The Suspense is Killing Me', you will write a short scene in which something alarming or mysterious happens to your character, gripping the reader and placing them at the edge of their seats (300 – 700 words).

Part 10 - Atmosphere

Discover how to weave atmosphere into your writing, enhancing the tone of your scenes and strengthening the emotional impact. In Assignment Ten, 'Atmosphere', you will write a scene in response to an image prompt and try to infuse it with an atmosphere of your choice (300 – 700 words)

Part 11 – Voice

Experiment with narrative voice and style, finding the unique sound that makes your writing distinct and memorable. In Assignment 11, 'V is For Voice', you will write a reflective piece in response to another writer's voice, thinking carefully about how it affects their work and can influence your own (200 – 500 words).

Part 12 - Plot

Get to grips with story structure and plotting, learning how to craft engaging narratives that flow logically and keep readers invested. For Assignment 12, 'Don't Lose the Plot,' you will write a complete short story which encompasses the skills you have developed so far on the course (500 – 1000 words).

Part 13 – Editing

Learn practical editing techniques to polish your work, from tightening sentences to refining story structure, so your writing shines. In the final assignment, 'Editing', you will write a complete short story and use the editing skills you have learnt to polish what you've created (400 – 800 words).

What Does Feedback Look Like?

Every assignment you submit will be returned with fully personalised feedback. This includes annotated comments on your imagery and ideas, structure, POV and language, as well as the technical areas, such as punctuation, grammar and spelling. Adding to this, each piece of feedback highlights what is working well and where improvements can be made using 'three triumphs' and 'three suggestions'. And of course, if you have any questions about your feedback, you're more than welcome to email us to discuss it.
